Anchor Point is the wave that put Morocco on the surf map. On a good winter swell, this long right-hand point break north of Taghazout village peels for hundreds of metres along the rocks. Here is what you need to know before you paddle out, from surfers who live a few minutes away in Tamraght.
Where is Anchor Point?
Anchor Point sits just north of Taghazout village, in Taghazout Bay, about 30 minutes from Agadir Airport. It is one of a string of right-hand points along this coast, together with Killer Point, Hash Point and Panoramas.
When does Anchor Point work?
Anchor Point needs a solid groundswell to wake up, so it is at its best in the winter season, roughly from October to March. On the right swell it produces long, fast walls with sections for turns. Who is Anchor Point for?
Anchor Point is a wave for experienced surfers. You should be comfortable paddling through whitewater on your own, taking off on unbroken waves, and surfing in strong currents and over rocks. If you are still learning to catch green waves, the gentle beach breaks around Tamraght are a much better place to progress. Our intermediate coaching is designed to get you ready for point breaks.
How to paddle out and where to sit
- Watch the sets for 15 minutes before you go in, and look at where the locals enter and exit.
- The rocks can be slippery and sharp, so many surfers wear reef booties.
- A long wave means a long paddle back: pace yourself.
- Respect the lineup order. On busy days, patience and a smile go a long way.
Crowds and etiquette
As Morocco’s most famous wave, Anchor Point gets busy on the best days, especially in December and January. Arrive early, never drop in, and give way to the surfer closest to the peak. On crowded days a local guide can take you to alternative points that are working with fewer people.
