Morocco Water Temperature and Which Wetsuit to Bring, Month by Month (2026)

The Atlantic coast of Morocco offers some of the most pleasant surf conditions in the North Atlantic, with sunshine most of the year and waves in every season. But the water is cooler than many people expect: it can be 30 °C on the beach in summer and you will still want a wetsuit. Knowing the water temperature month by month helps you pack the right gear and enjoy longer, more comfortable sessions.

This guide shows how warm the sea is in Taghazout Bay through the year, why the water is cooler than the air, which wetsuit you need in each season, and how water temperature fits with waves and crowds when you choose your dates. It is based on what our coaches and guests wear every day in Tamraght.

Air temperatures are typical daytime highs on the coast; mornings and evenings are cooler, especially in winter.

Why the water is cooler than the air

The Canary Current brings cooler water down the Moroccan coast from the north. In summer, steady northerly winds can also push surface water offshore and draw colder water up from below, a process called upwelling. That is why it can be 30 °C on the beach and the sea still feels fresh. In winter the air is mild, often around 20 °C during the day, and the water stays around 17 to 18 °C, so the difference is much smaller.

Which wetsuit for which season

December to April: 4/3 full suit

A 4/3 full suit is the comfortable choice, especially for early sessions and long days in the water. Surfers who do not feel the cold often manage with a good 3/2, but a 4/3 lets you stay out longer.

May, June and November: 3/2 full suit

The water warms up in late spring and is still pleasant in November. A 3/2 full suit is ideal.

July to October: 3/2 or springsuit

A 3/2 for long sessions or windy days, or a 2 mm springsuit on the warmest days. Some surfers go in boardshorts or a bikini with a rash vest for short sessions in late summer.

Booties, hoods and gloves

Booties and hoods are not needed for warmth in Morocco. Many surfers do wear reef booties on rocky point breaks like Anchor Point to protect their feet. A rash vest under the wetsuit helps prevent chafing during a full surf week.

Do you need to bring your own wetsuit?

No. All our surf packages include a wetsuit in the right thickness for the season, as well as a board and leash. If you have your own wetsuit and prefer it, bring it along. For everything else, see our packing guide.

Tips to stay warm in winter

  • Choose a well-fitting wetsuit: water flushing through is what makes you cold
  • Surf in the late morning when the sun is higher on the coldest days
  • Bring a warm hoodie or changing robe for after the session
  • Drink something hot at the beach café between sessions
  • Keep moving in the line-up

Water temperature vs waves: choosing your season

  • Warmest water: August to October, around 21 to 22 °C, often with the first autumn swells
  • Most consistent waves: November to March, with cooler water and bigger swells for the points
  • Best for beginners: spring, summer and early autumn, with smaller waves and milder water
